Allgäu – fresh mountain air, beautiful nature and great excursions in southern Germany

With its mountains, lakes, and castles, the Allgäu region is one of Germany's most popular travel destinations. In addition to hiking, biking, and climbing, the region offers a wide variety of vacation options. In addition to the beautiful natural surroundings, the culture and delicious food in the Allgäu will perfect your trip to southern Germany! We'll share our favorite hiking routes, places to stop, and other excursion tips in the Allgäu. So grab your leather backpack and have fun :)

Hiking-our favorite routes

Grünten

The ascent to Grünten is possible from Burgberg, Rettenberg, or Kranzegg, for example. The shortest route leads from the Kammeregg Alp via the Grünten Hut and from there over the cable-secured eastern ridge with an iron ladder to the summit. Passing the Kammeregg Alp on the left, you can either take the paved road to the Grünten Hut. Or you can pass the hut on the right and continue along the pretty meadow path towards Grünten.

Lower Gaisalpsee

The hike to the Lower Gaisalpsee near Oberstdorf is certainly one of the most beautiful of the easier mountain hikes in the Allgäu. You first hike through the Reichenbach Gorge to the Gaisalpe (alpine pastures are called "Alps" in the Allgäu). From there, you continue to the Lower Gaisalpsee, where you can take a dip in warm weather. A short section (just before the Gaisalpsee) leads over rocky terrain (rope safety!), but it's not difficult.

Starzach Gorge

The Starzlach Gorge in Sonthofen is a nature experience for young and old, as no special fitness is required. In the gorge itself, water cascades down several waterfalls, creating an impressive natural spectacle. The circular hike takes about 1.5 hours. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Canyoning is also possible here!

For all hikes, sturdy footwear (preferably hiking boots made of real leather ) is essential!

Food & Drink in the Allgäu

There are still a few small, traditional family breweries in the Allgäu region. So, on your trip, you can sample many different beers from different breweries. Cheese spaetzle ( cheese and spinach spaetzle) is still eaten as seriously and regularly in Allgäu cuisine as it once was, as are cabbage and spinach spaetzle (sauerkraut and spinach noodles) and cabbage fritters. You can get the best cheese spaetzle (apart from Grandma's, of course!) at a restaurant near Immenstadt, among others.

Day trips

Hiking isn't really your thing? No problem—in the Allgäu, you can also enjoy plenty of excursions away from the mountain peaks.

Kempten

The largest town, Kempten in the Allgäu region, is always worth a visit. Along with Trier, Kempten is one of the oldest towns in Germany. Since Kempten was once a Roman town (Cambodunum), you can follow in the footsteps of the Romans here (Cambodunum Archaeological Park). Other highlights include the Prince-Abbot's Residence, including the Court Garden and Orangery, the Baroque St. Lorenz Basilica, and the Burhhalde (a castle ruin in the city center). A short break is best enjoyed in one of the small cafés on the Town Hall Square.

Neuschwanstein Castle

From the parking lot, a short, fairly steep path leads up to the castle. You can access the castle courtyard without booking a guided tour. A tour of the castle takes about 20 minutes and has always been very crowded. Due to hygiene regulations, group sizes have had to be significantly reduced. This means that only about 10% of the previously permitted number of visitors can visit the castle each day! Tickets can only be booked online.

From the Marienbrücke (St. Mary 's Bridge), you have a beautiful view of Neuschwanstein Castle. Most of the stunning photos of the castle were probably taken here. However, it's usually so crowded that you'll have to wait in line to get onto the bridge. Depending on the time of day, the wait can easily be several hours.

Alpsee Coaster & Bärenfalle Climbing Forest

A highlight in the Allgäu region are the many different summer toboggan runs . Germany's longest toboggan run can be found near the Großer Alpsee in Immenstadt. The Alpsee Coaster is 2.8 km long and offers speeds of up to 40 km/h. Right next to the year-round toboggan run is the Bärenfalle climbing forest , Bavaria's largest high ropes course. Here, you can swing back and forth between the trees on 19 different courses (various levels of difficulty). There's even a kiddy course for toddlers (3-5 years old).

Are you now keen to take a trip to the Allgäu and breathe in the fresh mountain air again? Then pack your large leather travel bag , take sturdy shoes, and a sturdy canvas or leather backpack , and off you go to the beautiful Allgäu.

We wish you lots of fun and wonderful days in the mountains!
