Dresden (Saxony) – the perfect symbiosis of Baroque and hip modernity

800 years of history, peppered with tragedies, has seen the Saxon capital rise like a phoenix from the ashes, making Dresden one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities in Germany today, at the heart of the here and now.

Dresden, located in eastern Germany on the border with the Czech Republic, was heavily bombed during World War II. Many of Dresden's most famous buildings were destroyed. However, the scars of war are barely visible on the iconic buildings, rebuilt brick by brick. Strolling through the city's cobbled streets and admiring the Renaissance, Baroque, and 19th-century architecture, it's hard to believe that many of these magnificent buildings are replicas.

The Elbe River divides the traditional Old Town and the hip New Town, which offers one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in East Germany. A very good first impression of the Old Town with its imposing buildings can be seen from Brühl's Terrace . This approximately 500-meter-long terrace above the Elbe is also known as the "Balcony of Europe" and is part of the remains of Dresden's fortress. This terrace was once reserved only for the nobility, but today it is freely accessible and definitely worth a visit.

If you're taking a trip to Dresden, you should definitely visit the Albertinum , the museum of modern art. With its covered courtyard, it offers plenty of space for exhibitions and events and hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Back to the old town, where you only have to turn around the main square once, you will find the Residenzschloss , the Hofkirche and the world-famous Semperoper , all close together.

Dresden's Frauenkirche forms the proud center of the old town. The 18th-century church boasts one of the largest domes in Europe and is a spectacular example of Protestant sacred architecture. In 1945, the church's dome collapsed completely and served as a war memorial for more than 50 years. Today, it stands as a symbol of reconciliation between the formerly warring nations. Dresden's most famous monument, however, is the Golden Rider . The monument depicts the Saxon Elector and Polish King Augustus the Strong, who was famous for his insane love of gold and precious stones.

If you want to experience Dresden's hip side, head to the Neustadt district. With a vibrant street art scene, you'll find art on almost every corner. We recommend packing a leather city backpack and taking a short tour of the city. A must-see on your city tour is the Kunsthofpassage , which consists of five uniquely designed courtyards, each dedicated to a different theme. This includes, for example, the Courtyard of the Elements with its blue facade and rain gutters that create a special sound when it rains. The mix of stylish shops, trendy restaurants, and trendy bars and clubs is sure to make any hipster's heart beat faster.

After so much concentrated culture and fresh trends, hopefully there's still time for a true world record: a visit to the officially most beautiful dairy shop in the world (including an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 1998), the Pfundsmolkerei . Let yourself be surprised by the exquisite dairy delicacies this shop has to offer. You won't believe your eyes! ;)

We wish you a pleasant stay in Dresden!
