City Trip: ¡Vamos a Sevilla!

Seville is the capital of the autonomous region of Andalusia and, with its nearly 700,000 inhabitants, the fourth-largest city in Spain. It boasts the largest old town in all of Spain. Seville's historic city center is almost as large as the old town of Venice. Fortunately, Seville is not yet as overrun by tourists as many other Spanish destinations. Here, you can still experience much of the authentic Andalusian culture and Spanish tranquillity.

If you're planning a trip to Seville, keep in mind its Mediterranean climate. The city is one of the hottest in all of Europe, with very mild, pleasant winters but very hot summers. Temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius in summer. Ideally, you'll travel to the Andalusian capital in spring or fall.

In our blog post you will find some useful travel tips (sightseeing, restaurant recommendations, bars, etc.) for Seville.

Sightseeing classic

Alcázar of Seville:

No matter which guidebook you open, you can't avoid the Reales Alcázares de Sevilla. And that's absolutely justified. The Alcázar is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Spanish royal family still resides there when they are in Seville. The architecture and buildings of the Alcázar date back to Moorish times. The accompanying gardens are also beautiful and impressive. Fans of the series Game of Thrones should know: the centuries-old palace and garden complex was the filming location for the Water Gardens of Dorne. When visiting the Alcázar, it's best to allow enough time (2-3 hours) to see everything, as the grounds are very extensive.

The lines at the ticket office are often very long, so it's worth purchasing an online ticket in advance. This will save you a lot of waiting time.

Cathedral + Giralda:

Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Spain and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The former mosque was converted into a cathedral after the Christian reconquest. The former minaret is now the cathedral's bell tower (Giralda) and one of the city's landmarks. Among other things, the cathedral's remains are located inside.

It is also advisable to visit the cathedral during the week, as the queues can be very long.

Plaza de España + Maria Luisa Park:

Almost every large Spanish city has a Plaza de España. But is there a more beautiful Plaza de España than Seville? We haven't found one yet, but we'd be happy to be proven wrong ;) The architecture of the square is incredibly impressive, and its semicircular shape means it's almost always in the sun. In the middle of the square there's a fountain where you can regularly spot little rainbows. The square was built in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition; today the buildings serve as the seat of the Andalusian government. Along the walls of the semicircle, you'll find various ornaments and benches decorated with tiles, representing the country's 48 provinces. The Plaza de España was used as a filming location for the planet Naboo ("Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones"). Right next to the Plaza de España is Maria Luisa Park. The park covers approximately 400,000 square meters and is ideal for a leisurely stroll. It provides ample shade during the hot months and is a place to relax. The complex features numerous fountains, ponds, and monuments.

Puente Isabel + Triana:

From the old town, the Triana district stretches across the Guadalquivir. The route to Triana usually leads over the Puente Isabel II Bridge, often called Puente de Triana by Sevillians. It's worth taking a moment to pause on the bridge, as from there you have a great view of the old town and the cathedral, as well as the riverside of Triana with its colorful houses (Calle Betis). Azulejos, beautiful murals created with tiles, can be found everywhere in Triana. The district is home to the former ceramics workshop Cerámica Santa Ana, which now houses the Seville Ceramics Museum. The lively heart of Triana is the pedestrian street Calle San Jacinto. There you will find various shops, cafés, tapas bars, etc. A visit to the Mercado de Triana is also recommended.

Metropol Parasol:

The Metropol Parasol is a wooden structure in Seville's old town. Due to its shape, it is also called Las Setas (the Mushrooms) by locals. Completed in 2011, the structure was ostensibly intended to become Seville's new landmark, but visually, it doesn't really fit in with the old town. Nevertheless, the observation deck offers one of the best views of Seville. The view is especially beautiful at sunset.

Tapas, tapas, tapas:

Tapas restaurants can be found on practically every street corner in Seville. Most are generally very affordable and serve delicious food. A classic is the dish salmorejo (cordobés) – a cold, thick tomato soup, not to be confused with gazpacho. Here are our four recommendations, the first three of which offer a more modern take on tapas. The fourth restaurant (Los Coloniales) is a traditional, popular classic.

  • La Jolla by 1906 - Calle Dos de Mayo, 10
  • La Chunga - Calle Arjona, 13
  • Al Ajibe – Plaza Alameda de Hercules 76
  • Los Coloniales - Calle Fernández y González 36

Bars and nightlife:

Sevillians love to party hard. The most popular nightlife districts are Alfafa and Alameda, although the crowd in Alameda is a bit more alternative. But there's also plenty of partying, drinking, and dancing on Calle Betis, on the riverbank in Triana. You'll find the best cocktails in a relaxed atmosphere here:

  • The Second Room - Calle de Placentines 19
  • LeXIX - Calle Tomás de Ibarra 9

You have a great view in the Rooftop bar of the Hotel Doña Maria . Sunset cocktails with a magnificent view of the cathedral.
