Flims-Laax (Switzerland) – a holiday full of adventure and breathtaking natural attractions
Welcome to one of the most beautiful holiday regions in Europe!
Holidays in Flims or Laax mean variety and mountain adventures on 330 km of bike trails in the summer and over 220 km of scenic downhill runs in the winter. For many snowboarders, Laax is a second home. They appreciate the four snow parks for all skill levels, as well as the Freestyle Academy, the world's largest halfpipe, and events like the LAAX Open. Families enjoy the Ami Sabi children's program, and the region's three lakes in Laax and the Flims Forest provide summer cooling.
This gem of Graubünden sits 1,019 meters above sea level. The climate in Laax is warm and temperate for its altitude. It enjoys sunshine in the summer and, thanks to its glaciers and slopes reaching over 3,000 meters, is snow-sure like few other ski resorts.
Social media heavyweight: Plenty of "Instagrammable spots" in Flims & Laax: Especially on Instagram, you can't ignore the region: Lake Cauma, the Rhine Gorge, the Sardona Tectonic Arena, and the Waterway – the four biggest natural attractions in Flims are popular photo motifs on social media. But the destination has many other places to offer that are perfect for a post on your own Instagram feed. In winter, the snow park and the LAAX OPEN attract visitors, and in summer, the Pinut via ferrata, the Freestyle Academy, and the skate park. Whether you're a professional photographer or an amateur, everyone will find the perfect shot here.
Our tips for a long summer weekend in Laax-Flims:
Discover: UNESCO World Heritage Sardona Tectonic Arena
Nowhere else in the world are the evidence of mountain building as clearly visible as in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona Tectonic Arena. The collision of Africa and Europe has pushed, folded, and fractured rock layers over one another over millions of years. The globally unique visibility of these geological phenomena prompted the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to add the Sardona Tectonic Arena to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008 – as one of only 197 World Heritage sites worldwide!
Relax: Lake Cauma – the pearl of Flims
A Caribbean feeling with the Alps in view: Swimming, lounging, and sunbathing: Whether you're on foot or by bike, a detour to one of Switzerland's most beautiful lakes will make your trip perfect. Lake Cauma is particularly impressive with its striking turquoise-green and pleasantly cool water. Swimming in Lake Cauma simply belongs on every summer bucket list!
Adventure with the best view: Pinut via ferrata
The Pinut via ferrata is not for photographers with faint nerves. But those who embark on this adventure will be rewarded with interesting perspectives and spectacular views from the Flimserstein. The ladders set into the mountain offer numerous opportunities for photographic experimentation, and the via ferrata set ensures you are well secured at all times. It is the oldest existing via ferrata in Switzerland. It was first documented in 1739. It has since been modernized (2007) and can be done with or without a mountain guide. Climbing the Pinut via ferrata through the Flimserstein is a thrilling, low-risk nature experience when climbing with equipment. The via ferrata leads through caves, over ladders, and over three nearly vertical rock steps. Children as young as 12 can complete the Pinut in Flims. The route is not technically difficult, but requires a head for heights in certain sections. The Pinut via ferrata is therefore also ideal for via ferrata beginners. Please check with the tourist office for further information (weather, tips, etc.). A via ferrata set can also be rented here.
Hiking: Trutg dil Flem – follow the course of the Flem over 7 bridges
The award-winning Flims Water Trail leads you from the source of the Flem stream in the upper Segnesboden, past unique gorge landscapes, down to the village center of Flims. This experience reveals the most beautiful aspects of water hiking. You'll cross seven bridges, some of them boldly designed by the famous Graubünden bridge builder Jürg Conzett. From these, you can enjoy a particularly good view of the bizarre rock formations in the Flem gorges and listen to the rushing mountain stream. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can follow the Trutg dil Flem stream down into the valley. Ambitious hikers venture the ascent in the opposite direction. In addition to the water trail, there are countless other beautiful hikes in the region, all of which are great to enjoy with our sturdy, large leather backpacks ;).
Downhill adventure: TREK Runcatrail
The ultimate flow experience for bikers. At 7.6 km long, it's one of the longest flow country trials in all of Europe. As a rookie, you roll over simple waves; as a pro, you jump or surf over doubles, tables, and waves. With its various jumps and berms, the TREK Runcatrail is a playground that guarantees maximum flow. To ensure you can use the trail even in bad weather, the wooden elements are coated with sand paint, preventing them from becoming slippery even in wet conditions. The trial is also great for beginners in this area; the panorama is incredible, and the flow experience is unique.
Climbing adventure: Climbing in the Flims high ropes course
Start your adventure at the climbing park in Switzerland: Despite the treetop heights of the high ropes course in Flims, you can first get used to climbing before venturing onto the rocks and cliffs. The high ropes course is set up like a climbing forest – swing from tree to tree with safety equipment – and experience an adrenaline-pumping adventure on the various courses. The climbing park is ideal for children and professionals alike. Numerous courses with varying levels of difficulty offer an unforgettable climbing and outdoor experience for everyone with a bit of courage, skill, and a head for heights.
CHILL OUT – RELAX: Countless huts and bars
For example, the cool mountain restaurant GALAAXY, the Foppa restaurant at 1424 m with its amazing terrace or the Legna Bar at the Flims valley station with its wonderful atmosphere is a must for us after one of the longest valley runs in winter or a hike to Foppa in summer.
Food: Spoilt for choice
The region boasts many great restaurants, especially thanks to winter tourism. But beware: not all restaurants are open all day in the summer.
Our favorites: NOOBA (Pan Asian Cuisine in Laax), LA STALLA (Cheese Fondue above the clouds) and the classic POMODORO (best pizza in town)
Overnight stay: usually not quite as cheap
Switzerland continues to live up to its reputation... If you're more concerned with enjoyment than money, the Signina Hotel, with its pool, fitness center, and childcare right next to the lift, is perfect. For snowboarders, the RIDERS Hotel, with its own club, is perfect. You can also find cheaper accommodations via Airbnb or at the Hotel RÄTIA in Ilanz. Whichever accommodation you choose, you should definitely bring one of our large leather travel bags ;).
