Würzburg (Franconia) – the baroque highlight of Franconia

With its numerous wine taverns and wineries as well as the characteristic Bocksbeutel beer, Würzburg is the heart of the Franconian wine region . Würzburg is also known for its Baroque and Rococo buildings, particularly the 18th-century Würzburg Residence. The history of the Marienberg Fortress, which towers above the city, dates back to 1000 BC. Because of the spectacular locations, the film “The Three Musketeers” (one of the most complex on-location productions in Europe to date) was shot at Würzburg locations such as the Residence, the Old Main Bridge and Marienberg Fortress. Actors Milla Jovovich, Christoph Waltz and Orlando Bloom weren't the only ones who were enthusiastic about Würzburg: “When we arrived in Bavaria, the actors and all the crew were amazed,” says producer Robert Kulzer.

Furthermore, the Main Valley / Würzburg is one of the most climatically favorable regions in Central Europe. Its wine-growing climate is characterized by high summer temperatures (July average: 18.3 °C) and low annual rainfall (approximately 600 mm/year). Perfect for a long summer weekend in the Franconian city. We'll tell you what you absolutely must do and see on a vacation in Würzburg.

Highlights and tips for a weekend in Würzburg

Würzburg Residence

The Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, was built in the 18th century. Construction began in 1720 and was "already" completed in 1744. The Würzburg Residence is the city palace of the Würzburg prince-bishops and, in its coherence, is considered the most beautiful Baroque palace in Germany. The building ingeniously combines the various styles not only of German Baroque, but also of French Classicism and the Viennese Imperial Style. The result is a Gesamtkunstwerk of exceptional character and individuality. The architectural catchment area of the Würzburg Residence stretches from Vienna to Paris, and from Genoa and Venice to Amsterdam. This is essentially the achievement of Balthasar Neumann, who had to reconcile the often divergent wishes of the art-loving Schönborn family.

If you visit the Würzburg Residence, you should definitely admire the world's largest continuous ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1750–1753) on the column-free vault above the staircase. The Residence's Court Garden is also an absolute highlight.

Marienberg Fortress

Marienberg Fortress is a prominent landmark of the city, visible from afar. It enjoys a strategically advantageous and prominent position approximately 100 meters above the Main Valley. Marienberg, inhabited since the late Bronze Age, was home to a fort belonging to the Franconian-Thuringian dukes in the early 8th century, along with a church that became Würzburg's first bishopric in 741. From 1200 onward, an unusually large castle was built, which was expanded and extended in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The castle was only briefly conquered once during the Thirty Years' War (1631). The storming of the castle by the Swedes in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War prompted Johann Philipp von Schönborn to surround Marienberg with a ring of massive bastions, which significantly shape the castle's appearance. Since then, the castle has never been conquered again, although even prominent warriors such as Napoleon attempted to do so. The castle is definitely worth a visit!

Würzburg Cathedral: St. Kilian Cathedral

Würzburg Cathedral is also a must-see on your city trip. Saint Kilian is the apostle of Franconia. He was martyred in Würzburg around 689 along with his companions Kolonat and Totnan and is buried in neighboring Neumünster.
