Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Bavaria) – the romantic medieval town

Rothenburg ob der Tauber, the town in northern Bavaria, is known for its medieval architecture. The townscape is characterized by cobblestone streets and beautiful half-timbered houses. The Old Town is home to many old half-timbered houses. The preserved city wall also includes medieval gatehouses and towers, as well as a covered walkway above the wall. The medieval town hall even has a tower offering panoramic views. The town's church, St. James's Church, also features an elaborate, late Gothic altarpiece by woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider. But the beautiful townscape isn't the only reason you should visit the town. We'll show you which of the town's specialties you absolutely must try and what else you can do on a weekend in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

OUR TIPS FOR A WEEKEND IN ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER:

Eat and taste

We recommend: Restaurant Reichsküchenmeister

In addition to typical Franconian specialties, there's also a flammerie with a large and special selection of fluffy cakes. The tarte flambée with wild ham, asparagus, and strawberries is a must-try.

In addition, the "Genießen ob der Tauber" initiative in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is dedicated to wine and culinary delights. Several participating restaurants offer fine seasonal dishes served with the region's finest wines.

The "Versucherle" (Versucherle) is particularly recommended. These consist of three small courses, each served with three corresponding wines. This offer is available at participating restaurants for €20 per person. It's an ideal way to get acquainted with local wines and specialties and is perfect for a chic dinner. With a high-quality leather handbag, you'll be perfectly equipped for this.

Specialty of the city

The snowballs

Schneeballen (snowballs) are a Rothenburg specialty. They're a shortcrust pastry. You can try them at the Striffler bakery . You can even peek into the bakery and watch the snowballs being made.

Using a serrated wheel, the rolled out dough is cut into even strips, which are then placed in a so-called snowball iron. Deep-fried, this creates the typical round shape. Dusted with powdered sugar, the pastry resembles a snowball. In Rothenburg, you'll find Schneeballen in a variety of variations, including with chocolate, coconut, and fillings. Of course, there's also the traditional version with powdered sugar.

Tip: The Striffler bakery has small snowballs, which are great to try and as a souvenir.

Experience culture

In Rothenburg ob der Tauber, there are several classical concerts in the Imperial City Hall or on the market square. The city's museums host changing special exhibitions, and the open-air theater at the Rothenburg Museum (Toppler Theater) is also worth a visit, especially in summer. Other annual highlights include the historical festivals at Pentecost (Meistertrunk) and in September (Imperial City Festival), as well as the Wine Village and the Fairytale Magic. Regular theme years, such as the current one (2020): "Picturesque – Rothenburg as a Landscape Garden," offer a thematic framework for special tours, exhibitions, and concerts.

Hike

There's plenty to do not only in the city, but also in the surrounding area. There are 13 hiking trails around Rothenburg ob der Tauber. These lead along the Tauber River to the many mills around Rothenburg. Some of the trails also lead to the picturesque Wildbad spa, where a stop for an afternoon coffee is worthwhile. In the communities surrounding Rothenburg, Franconian taverns invite you to relax with refreshing drinks and delicious food. In the Tauber Valley, you'll pass the popular Unter den Linden beer garden. On your hikes, you'll also enjoy many beautiful views of the city. The most beautiful vantage points of the city are along the Reitsachser Steige, at the Engelsburg Castle, and at the Hochzeitswäldchen near the Rothenburg climbing forest. Even from the valley, the view of the historic city walls and the An der Eich vineyard is worthwhile. If you don't want to make a long detour, you can also take an informative walk along the wine trail or take the tower path around the old town. A leather backpack for drinks, a jacket, camera, etc. is a must for hikes and walks.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber may not be on everyone's lips, but after our visit, we think the small, romantic medieval town is definitely worth a weekend trip!

We wish you a wonderful time in Rothenburg ob der Tauber!
