Lyon (France) - the capital of gastronomy
Lyon, the city through which two rivers flow, is France's second-largest metropolitan region after Paris. Lyon flourished centuries ago thanks to its textile industry, and the city boasts many historic buildings listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites! Located in southeastern France, the city enjoys a pleasant climate. The famous annual Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) in December draws many tourists to the French city every year. But Lyon is not only known for this; the French city is also considered the "capital of gastronomy."
We'll tell you what you shouldn't miss on a city trip to Lyon.
Our tips for your city trip to Lyon
Eat
Since Lyon holds the title of "capital of gastronomy," it should come as no surprise that you can eat a lot and well here. So, if you're traveling to Lyon, trying traditional Lyonnais dishes is a must!
Lyon's main traditional dishes consist of all kinds of meat, such as roast suckling pig and beef stew. In addition, Lyonnais people use various offal in their dishes, which are less commonly used in other countries. Lyonnais dishes are usually quite generous and full-flavored, making them a good choice for a complete meal.
Lyon's Old Town (Vieux Lyon) is home to many Lyon-style taverns. However, if you want to find the most authentic, traditional Lyonnais dishes, look for a Bouchon Lyonnais restaurant. These small restaurants were originally built for workers, for whom the typical hearty dishes were cooked. These traditional restaurants are mostly still family-run, and here you can sample the most traditional and best rustic dishes in the city. No matter which restaurant you choose, you'll rarely have a bad experience in Lyon. So don't forget to pack a nice outfit or two, along with a matching small leather bag for women , to ensure you're dressed up when visiting the restaurants.
We recommend: Le Pailleron - This restaurant is very popular with locals.

Patisserie
France is known not only for its excellent cuisine, but also for its delicious pastries. Croissants, macarons, and éclairs are world-famous. Therefore, during your visit to the French city, you shouldn't miss a good patisserie to enjoy one of the country's specialties.
We recommend: Patisserie Pignol
This experienced dessert shop opened in 1954. Pastry chef Jean-Paul Pignol has even won the Most Outstanding Personal Award in France. Pignol's desserts may not be as fancy as those from Ladurée or Pierre Hermé, but their beautiful, sumptuous desserts will definitely win you over! Plus, you can get the sweet taste that locals love here at reasonable prices.
Most beautiful places in the city
Since a city trip is usually not enough to experience everything in one city, we show you our two favorite places in the city:
1. Old Lyon
Like many European cities, Lyon's "Old Town," the "Vieux Lyon," has been preserved and is under UNESCO protection. This is where the city's locals lived and still live. The beautiful old town captivates with its winding alleys and colorful, historic building facades. Stroll through hidden passages and sip a fine French wine in a small courtyard. In the "Vieux Lyon," you'll also find various small specialty shops and lovely restaurants.
2. The Tête d'Or Park
Lyon's Parc de la Tête d'Or covers an area of over 100 hectares. The park is perfect for a quiet afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Here you can relax and bask in the sun after a long day of sightseeing before ending the evening in one of the many fine restaurants.
We think Lyon is not only a great alternative to Paris, but the French city also has a lot to offer. Therefore, the "capital of gastronomy" definitely belongs on your travel list.
