Innsbruck (Austria) – the beautiful Austrian Alpine city
As soon as you arrive, the city will enchant you! Innsbruck offers beautiful views: a fantastic mountain panorama, a beautiful sky-blue river flowing alongside colorful houses, and of course, the typical Austrian specialties and the warmth of the people that keep you coming back! Small but perfectly formed. In the charming Tyrolean Alpine capital, everything is a little closer together. From the most famous landmark, the Golden Roof in the old town, to the ski slope on the Nordkette at an altitude of 2,000 meters: all in just under 30 minutes. But Innsbruck also has a lot to offer culturally. Not only the various museums, castles, and festivals, but also the constantly growing restaurant and bar scene speak for themselves. Furthermore, the more than 30,000 students bring a breath of fresh air to the city. To ensure you're optimally equipped for your trip, we've put together a few Innsbruck travel tips for you:
The Court Church
The Hofkirche (Court Church), located on the edge of Innsbruck's old town, was built between 1553 and 1563 as the burial church of Emperor Maximilian I, who died in 1519. However, the coffin remained empty; Maximilian was buried in the castle of Wiener Neustadt. Nevertheless, the Hofkirche in Innsbruck is arguably the most important monument in Tyrol and the most magnificent of all imperial tombs in Europe. Particularly impressive are the 28 life-size bronze statues surrounding the tomb. They depict Emperor Maximilian's relatives and his role models. The name "Schwarz-Mander-Kirche" (Black Man Church), as the Hofkirche is popularly called, also derives from these figures.
Bergisel Ski Jump
The Bergisel Olympic Ski Jump is one of the four venues for the International Four Hills Tournament. Opened in 2002, the renovated Olympic ski jump, designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, has since become a sporting and tourist attraction. An inclined elevator takes visitors to a height of approximately 250 meters above Innsbruck in just two minutes. There, in addition to a panoramic restaurant, there is also a viewing terrace with a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of the state capital and its fascinating surrounding mountains.
The Golden Roof
The Golden Roof is the landmark of the Tyrolean capital, located in the heart of the old town. The magnificent oriel and its roof, decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles, were built by Maximilian I. Visitors to the Golden Roof Museum can experience the history of this unique building and the reign of Emperor Maximilian I. The museum is equipped with the latest technology, providing impressive insights into late medieval Tyrol with the help of sound installations and touchscreens. Creative stations and historical costumes awaken curiosity about the Middle Ages. And don't forget to enjoy an imperial view of the old town from the magnificent dungeon!
Nordkette and Hungerburg
The Nordkette is one of four mountain ranges and gets its name from its location north of the Inn River. It gives Innsbruck its famous mountain panorama. A perfect destination for all hiking enthusiasts! Want to explore the mountains but lack mountaineering experience? No problem: From the city center, you can take a convenient bus to Hungerburg (10 minutes). From there, take the Hungerburgbahn (a cable car) up to Seegrube! From Seegrube, at an altitude of 1,905 meters, you'll enjoy a stunning view of the city! You can also fortify yourself with delicious specialties on the restaurant terrace. That's not enough for you? Then take the Hafelekarbahn cable car even higher! From there, it's just a short walk to the Hafelekarspitze at 2,403 meters. Various hiking trails are also available from up here or at one of the lower stations. You're guaranteed a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains!
Drinks with a panoramic view
Speaking of panoramic views! We have a very special tip for you: the Lichtblick 360° Bar in the city center, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city's mountain panorama from the wraparound terrace. On a nice, sunny day, you can relax with a beer, a "Weiß-Sauer" (white wine), or even a "G'spritzter" (spiced beer). This bar is located on the seventh floor of the Rathausgalerien (town hall galleries) on Marie-Theresienstraße – in the city center. Another panoramic view of the beautiful Alpine city can be found at Adlers Bar near the main train station. The bar is part of the Adlers Hotel, but guests who aren't checked into the hotel can also enjoy an evening cocktail here!
A dream for all ski fans
The city on the edge of the Alps: Surely no other city boasts as many attractive ski resorts in such close proximity as this one. A huge hit: There's a free ski bus that takes all winter sports enthusiasts from the city to the slopes in just a few minutes. (For the free ski bus, you need a Welcome Card, which you receive automatically and free of charge upon check-in at all participating partner hotels – even with a one-night stay). Can't decide which ski resort to buy a pass for? No problem: There's one ticket that covers ALL ski resorts. It's a 9-in-1 ticket: the Olympiaworld Ski Pass.
If you're also thinking about a trip to beautiful Innsbruck, all we can say is: pack your large leather travel bag and take a sturdy backpack for excursions, because Innsbruck is definitely worth the trip!
