Bolzano (Italy) - the charming capital of South Tyrol

Welcome to the capital of South Tyrol! Located on the southern side of the Alps, Bozen – or Bolzano, as it's known in Italian – is brimming with charm. South Tyroleans are a unique people, feeling more Tyrolean than Italian. What you can't deny, however, is that they excel at the Italian dolce vita ! And so, Bozen is not only the starting point for wonderful hikes and mountain tours of all kinds, but also a city where you can indulge yourself!

The climate in South Tyrol, with its 300 days of sunshine a year, is fantastic. This makes the hilly fields around Bolzano so productive. Did you know that one in ten apples sold in Europe comes from South Tyrol? The hills of South Tyrol are home to a wealth of fruit and the grapes for the wonderful South Tyrolean wine. The many vineyards, in particular, influence life and gastronomy in Bolzano. Every autumn, the "Törggelen" (traditional wine festival) takes place. Locals and tourists alike wander through the vineyards from farm to farm, sampling the young wine. All sorts of culinary specialties are also available. Dumplings, doughnuts, and chestnuts are delicacies that simply cannot be missed!

Our tips for a weekend in Bolzano:

Stay overnight:

It's best to look for an apartment in a farm or vineyard on the outskirts of the city – the hospitable South Tyroleans will take good care of you and will probably give you a few insider tips for a hike.

We recommend: Kandlerhof Winery, Untermagdalena 30, 39100 Bolzano – the young winemaker Hannes is happy to present his creations to you at a wine tasting!

Eat:

The city is full of excellent pizzerias. But you can also find many fine restaurants in Bolzano. For a truly unique experience, we recommend taking a short hike out of town and visiting a farm in the surrounding vineyards.

We recommend: Föhrnerhof, Glaninger Weg 19, 39100 Bozen – especially during Törggelen season, be sure to reserve a few weeks in advance!

Cake:

If you're there in the fall, be sure to try the "Käschtenherzen" (box hearts) at the Klaus pastry shop . It's a local insider tip! (Piazza Maria Delago 1, 39100 Bolzano)

Drinks:

In Bolzano, you'll immediately feel the Italian flair. Be sure to enjoy a Spritz in the city's piazza.

We recommend: Restaurant Nadamas, Piazza delle Erbe 43, 39100 Bolzano – here you can watch the hustle and bustle of one of Bolzano's main squares while enjoying a cool drink in the sun.

Hike:

We recommend a climb to the Tschafon Hut. The hike takes about 2.5 hours and requires a bit of fitness. Nevertheless, the hike isn't considered difficult, and the best part is that the famous Rosengarten presents itself at its most beautiful during the ascent! Don't forget a small leather backpack filled with a picnic of delicious South Tyrolean cheese and speck. ;D

With its Italian charm and beautiful landscape, Bolzano is certainly a great alternative to other, far-flung destinations this year!

We wish you wonderful days in the capital of South Tyrol!
