Passau (Bavaria) - a trip to the three rivers city
Did you know that Passau is also called "The City of Three Rivers"? Passau has a very special location. Three different rivers converge near Passau: the Danube, the Inn, and the Ilz. The cityscape is shaped by these three rivers: the Inn, a mountain river, is brilliant green, while the Danube—one of the largest rivers in Europe—appears almost black.
Passau's beautiful old town lies between the Inn and Danube rivers, tapering to a point where they meet. From the boat moorings, you can look across the Danube to Veste Oberhaus , Passau's castle, built in the 13th century. There's also a museum here, which has reopened.
On the Inn side, there's a lovely promenade, perfect for strolling and relaxing. From here, you'll enjoy a fantastic view of the colorful houses of Passau. This unique location and Passau's beautiful old town are the reason why Passau is such a popular tourist destination. The winding, cobblestone streets, the imposing cathedral, and the many wonderful cafés and restaurants are definitely worth a visit.
That may sound picturesque, but it's sleepy. Passau would be just that if it weren't for the university. On the banks of the Inn River, not far from the old town, lies Passau's campus, where almost 12,000 young people from all over the world study. This makes Passau a classic student city, leading to numerous cultural events and shaping both its gastronomy and its vibrant nightlife.
Tips for a day trip:
Breakfast: At the Anton Coffee House. In summer, it's worth reserving a table in the beautifully planted, cozy garden.
Morning: After breakfast, you can take a stroll through the old town. Don't forget the beautiful Grabengasse and walk up Carlonengasse to the cathedral! It's best to bring a large backpack for the day so you have some drinks and a jacket in case of emergency.
Midday: Time for a climb to Veste Oberhaus! Comfortable sneakers and a bit of fitness are recommended. From the cathedral, it takes about half an hour. Simply cross the Luitpold Bridge over the Danube and follow the signs. At the top, " Das Oberhaus " awaits with its beer garden and a fantastic view of the city!
Afternoon: Descent from the fortress. It's worth walking around the top of the town – ideally along the Inn promenade back to the university. If you've already got room for a coffee or an Aperol Spritz, the terrace of the "INNSTEG" invites you to enjoy a drink. There, you can relax and reflect on your day in Passau before your journey home.
Even though Passau is admittedly not a big city, it is definitely worth a day or weekend trip!
